Sculpted by Atom Jaay in Medium, now a VRChat functional avatar

A different breed of avatar has begun appearing in VRChat, thanks to Oculus Medium. In this sculpting tool for the Oculus Rift, users can create inside VR with Oculus Touch controllers. Not long after Oculus Medium’s release, our community started experimenting with ways they might be able to bring their creations to life in VRChat.

Cubed Paradox was one of the first to figure out how to bring an avatar from Oculus Medium to VRChat, inspiring countless others to bring their own Medium creations in. In his video tutorial above, he walks you through the process of building the avatar in Medium to bringing it to life in VRChat.

The programs used in the above tutorial are Oculus Medium, Blender, Unity, and VRChat. You will also need the most recent VRChat SDK. A beginner’s level of Blender & Unity knowledge is recommended to follow along with the tutorial. If the rigging portion of the video in Blender looks a bit too complicated, try using Mixamo’s automatic rigger!

If you want your medium avatar to transfer over to VRChat with color, check out this video by Don Whitaker.

When creating an avatar using Oculus Medium, keep in mind that a humanoid shaped avatar works best in VRChat. The ability to export creations in Oculus Medium as .obj format makes all of this possible!

Share with us your Oculus Medium masterpiece in VRChat! We’ll see you back in the virtual world.
